D-1 Crewmember Visa (Temporary Worker)


Crewmember (D) visas are nonimmigrant visas for persons working on board sea vessels or international airlines in the United States, providing services required for normal operation and intending to depart the United States on the same vessel or any other vessel within 29 days. If you travel to the United States to join the vessel you will work on, in addition to a crewmember (D) visa, you also need a transit (C-1) visa or a combination C-1/D visa.

 

If you travel to the United States to meet and board the vessel you will work on, you need a Transit (C-1) visa. (This is in addition to the crewmember (D) visa required to work on the vessel.).

 

How to Apply:

 

The individual foreign worker must apply for this type of visa.

The steps are as follows:

 

1.  Complete the online VISA form DS-160.  There is an FAQ page for filling out the DS-160.  You may also be required to provide a photo.  Learn more about the photo requirements.

 

2.  Schedule an interview with an embassy official.  This is usually done at an embassy or consulate location in the country in which the individual lives.  Documents that will be required for the interview includes, a valid passport, a copy of the DS-160 confirmation page, application fee and photo.

 

3.  If the interview is successful and the visa is approved the individual will be asked to pay an issuance fee and be issued the visa to travel.

 
 

Fees:

 

-There is an Application fee for the DS-160 form which is $160.00.

 

-There is also an additional fee.  There is a "Visa Issuance Fee" you will have to pay once the visa is approved.
