Hiring Youth

According to the Department of Labor the following applies to hiring youth under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA):

Hours:

The minimum age for employing youth in non-agricultural positions is 14.  The hours worked by 14 & 15 year olds are limited to the following:

- Non-school hours;
- 3 hours in a school day;
- 18 hours in a school week;
- 8 hours on a non-school day;
- 40 hours on a non-school week;
- hours between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. (except from June 1 through Labor Day, when evening hours are extended to 9 p.m.)

Youth who are 16 years or older are not limited under the FLSA on the number of hours or times of day they can work.


Pay:

The FLSA stipulates that youth under the age of 20 can be paid $4.25 per hour for the first 90 consecutive calendar days of employment with an employer.  After 90 days, they have to be paid at least the full minimum wage.
