Maryland Gas Tax Hike

Gov. Martin O’Malley proposed increasing Maryland’s gas tax.

In the Maryland Transportation Financing and Infrastructure Investment Act of 2012 he proposes an increase by by 6 percent.

Maryland currently has a flat gasoline tax of 23.5 cents per gallon (which has been in place for 20-year).

The Governor wants to use the increased tax revenue to generate at least 7,500 annual construction jobs and reduce congestion on nearly every major state artery. He referenced more than $10 billion in road and transit projects.

The proposed tax increase does not seem to have the support it needs to become law at the moment. If it does become law it will adversely impact all businesses in Maryland by raising the cost of doing business.
