Twitter Limits Following

Twitter has changed the way it allow users to do.

With this new rule if you have less than 5,000 followers you will be allowed to follow up to 5,000 other accounts.

If you have more than 5,000 followers you will be allowed to follow an additional 10% of the total number of followers.  For example, if you have 5,000 followers you will be allowed to follow additional 500 accounts before you’re blocked from following more.  If you have 10,000 followers, you will be allowed to follow additional 1,000 accounts.

In the past you were only allowed to follow up to 2,000 more accounts that the amount following you back before you’re blocked from following more.  The new rule will allow you to follow more accounts the more followers you have. So, as your followers grow the more you will be able to follow and grow your following base.

Once you reach the max follow number, you may need to wait until your account has more followers before you can follow additional accounts.   This number is different for each account and is automatically calculated based on your unique ratio of followers to following.

Daily Follow Limits:

There were also new rules in place that define how many accounts you can follow in one day.

-Un-Verified Accounts:  Every un-Verified Twitter account will now be limited to following up to 400 accounts per day.

-Verified Twitter Accounts:  Verified Twitter accounts are able to follow up to 1,000 accounts per day.

Direct Message (Daily Limits):

Direct Messages is limited to 1,000 messages sent per day.

Tweets (Daily Limits):

Tweets will be limited to a total number of 2,400 per day. The daily update limit is further broken down into smaller limits for semi-hourly intervals. Retweets are counted as Tweets.

Why are these limits being imposed?  Twitter imposed these limits to alleviate some of the strain on the behind-the-scenes part of Twitter and reduce downtime and error pages.  They hope that this will improve the reliability on the system.
