What Is A FEIN

The FEIN is a tax ID issued by the Federal Government (the IRS) to organizations doing business in the U.S. in order to establish an account for paying taxes.

When Is A Federal Tax ID Required

Corporations or LLCs, employers, and, in some states,  those businesses that are also getting a Seller's Permit are required to obtain a Federal Tax Id Number (FEIN).

In general, unless you are a partnership, LLC, or corporation, you do not need a federal tax identification number. You can use your Social Security number.

 NOTE:

Again, your best bet is talk to an accountant who is familiar with the tax laws in your area. You may or may not need a federal tax number. You might just need a state sales tax license and be able to report sales under your Social Security number.
