Longevity of the ad:  Magazines are usually kept longer than newspaper ads because they are a high quality print. That's why you still see magazines from months ago hanging around in the doctor's office.  Someone is likely to pickup that magazine months from it's print date and see your ad.

How To Advertise In Magazines

Once you've determine who your target audience is chose the appropriate magazine to advertise in.

A commitment for a certain number of publishing is usually required.  A minimum commitment period is normally 6 months.

Be prepared to turn in your ad 1-6 months before it is published.
