Benefits of Newspaper Advertising

Reach: Newspaper ads can reach a large audience.  Over 43 million people in the U.S. read newspapers. When you place an ad in a newspaper that has a million readership that's how many people will see your ad.

Target Audience:  You can target a specific geographic area with a single campaign.  You can reach the an entire region (for example, mid-west), or a specific state or area of a state.

Affordability:  Newspaper advertising is cheaper than TV, Radio and Direct mail advertising and can be tailored to any budget.

Flexibility:  You can make changes to your ad at any time during your campaign.  Changes are easy and cost effective.

Disadvantages of Newspaper Advertising

Creativity:  It offers less opportunity for creativity when compared to online or TV advertising.

Audience:  Declining readership due to competition from online advertising.

Cost of Newspaper Advertising

You pay for ads based on the size of the ad, how long you want to run the ad and the time of week that you want to run the ad.

Size is determined by column inch.  A column inch is the number of inches wide with the number of inches high.  For example a 2 inch wide by a 2 inch high ad would be considered a 4 column inch ad (i.e. 2x2 = 4).

So, if the ad is priced a $10 per column inch your cost for a 4 column inch ad would be $40 ($10 x 4 =$40).

The cost of running a 1 column inch ad can be as low as $6.

Newspaper Advertising Tips

Time:  Give your ads time to work.  Consistency over time is what builds trust and credibility and make people want to respond to your ad.  Consider making your ad campaign run over a six month period.  Expect a few weeks to go by before you start seeing a response to your ad.

Placement:  Your ad should appear in the same place in the newspaper every week.  If someone see your ad the first time and did not respond to it they may go looking for it in the next issue of the newspaper in the same location.  This makes it easy for them to find it or tell someone else where to find it.

Frequency:  Your ad should run frequently, daily or weekly.

Day of the week:  The days of the week that most people read their newspapers are Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Sunday is the most popular day.

Size:  Choose a size ad that is appropriate for your budget and for your type of business.  Look at the size ads your competitors are using as a way to determine which is the right size for you ad.

Design:  Stick to a basic design of your ads so that readers can recognize it.  Make your ad stand out from the rest.  It must grab the audience's attention.

Implementing Newspaper Advertising

There are two ways you can approach newspaper advertising.

1.  Most States have a Statewide or regional wide network that can place your ads for you.  Their prices are inexpensive.  This option saves you the trouble of having to contact every newspaper in order to place your ads.  This option also offers you the best rates.

2.  The second option is to contact every newspaper you want to place the ad with and place your ad with them.  This is more time consuming and cost more.
