What Is TV Advertising

TV advertising is placing commercial (video advertisements) on local or national TV. The standard half-hour of television contains 22 minutes of program and 8 minutes of commercials - 6 minutes for national advertising and 2 minutes for local.  Typical TV ads run for 15 or 30 seconds.

Why Use TV Advertising

TV advertising is cheaper than you imagine it to be.  With TV you can reach a larger audience at a relatively low cost.  Consider that 99 percent of American households own a TV set.

You can create the commercial once and run it as often as you like.  You don't have to repeat the production cost.

New cable companies are started every year and they need advertising dollars to stay on the air.  In order to remain competitive for advertising dollars TV stations lower their price for advertising spots, thereby giving small businesses the opportunity to advertise in a way that big businesses can.

Advertising on television puts you in the same league as big businesses in the eyes of the customers.  Your business can gain instant credibility.

What Does TV Advertising Cost

When considering the cost of running a TV commercial you have to consider (1) the cost of producing the commercial and (2) the cost of airing it.

The ad production cost depends on the elements you want to include in the ad and the quality of the ad.

The average cost of airing a TV commercial is $300 per 1,000 impressions.  However, it can get to as low as $5 per 1,000 impressions.   An impression is the number of TV sets turned on at the time the commercial is ran. The cost for running the ad on TV depends on the time slot, programming and market you want to run your ad.

Placing ads on TV is not necessarily a high cost venture.  There are opportunities for getting your ads on TV at very low cost.  You have to shop around.

You should contact multiple agencies and request a quote for free.  Go with the one that best meet your needs.

Implementing TV Advertising

In order to place commercials on national TV you first have to have the commercial made.  This can be done one of several ways.  You can create the ad yourself or you can contact an Ad Agency.  See a list of resources below that help you create your ad.

Getting the ad on the air requires utilizing the service of an Ad Agent, Ad Agency or contacting the TV station directly.  See a list of Ad Agencies below.

What you should know about Ad Agents/Agencies:

If you utilize the service of an Ad Agency, they should only make money when you do. Ad agencies get a 15% "agency discount", or commission, from TV stations where they place your advertising.

If you pay your agent $2,000 for TV ads, the agent keeps $300 and pays the TV station $1,700.

Watch out for agencies that attempts to overdo commercial production in order to increase profits.  Some Agencies get the bulk of their income from the production of commercials.
