There are three ways to get paid from advertising.

CPC (Cost-Per-Click):  This is how much you get paid every time someone clicks on an ad on your website.  For example, if your CPC is $0.50, and you had 50 clicks, then you get paid $25.00, regardless of how often the ad was displayed.

CPM (Cost Per 1,000 impressions):  You get paid based on how many times your ad is displayed to thousands of visitors. If you charge $5 per CPM and the ad was displayed to 10,000 visitors, you get paid $50.00.

FLAT RATE:  No matter how many times the ad is displayed you get paid a flat rate (for example $200).

With Affiliate advertising you can get paid based on the number of clicks on an ad (as in Pay-Per-Click), or you get paid a percentage of the price of a product that someone buys from clicking on the ad displayed on your website.  The method will depend on the Ad Network.  This is good way to generate revenues if you have a new or established stie.  The most efficient way to approach this is to use an Affiliate Network instead of going to individual companies such as Target, Walmart, Toys-R-us, etc. to establish an affiliate relationship.
